Kisspeptin-10 (Kp-10), also known as Metastin (45-54), is the minimum biologically active fragment of the kisspeptin family of neuropeptides encoded by the KISS1 gene. As the master regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, kisspeptin acts upstream of GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus, binding to the G protein-coupled receptor KISS1R (GPR54) to trigger pulsatile GnRH release.
This upstream activation drives the downstream secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary, engaging the body's natural hormonal cascade rather than bypassing it in research models. Unlike exogenous gonadotropin analogs, kisspeptin works with the body's existing feedback systems, making it a tool for research into puberty onset, reproductive function, fertility regulation, and HPG-axis dysfunction.
